Get to Know Us

In a city grappling with healthcare disparities, SHOP emerged as a force for change. Philadelphia's homeless population, facing a high incidence of hypertension (14%-25%), needs support more than ever.

SHOP's mission is simple yet impactful: to provide ethical healthcare experiences. Our volunteers offer free blood pressure readings at shelters, bridging the gap to follow-up care by connecting individuals with clinics.

The significance of our cause is underscored by the broader context: in the United States, nearly half of adults (47%, or 116 million) contend with hypertension. Shockingly, only a quarter effectively manage the condition, elevating the risk of heart disease and stroke—leading causes of mortality.

As our impact steadily grows, with over 2000 individuals experiencing homelessness assisted annually, we are reminded that collective action creates meaningful change. This journey led us to collaborate with partners like the SHAMS clinic in West Philadelphia, working alongside Penn Medicine physicians. We expanded to mobile van clinics, delivering care where it matters most.

Our story persists, driven by the belief that small actions forge a healthier, fairer tomorrow.
